Former SFC junior and Accy goalie Toby Savin got MOM. How did John Coleman beat us to his signature when he played for us during his teenage years?

According to his wikipedia page he played for our community junior teams aged 5-12 before joining Wigan, Everton and Crewe's academies so he presumably was clearly en-route to a professional football career rather an a part time one.
Describes his time at Southport at being in a "youth academy" but our kids teams are far from that. If they're good enough for a professional club's academy how are we expected to hang on to them at that age?
