Wigan woes
After being given a second 4 point deduction Wigun a major sponsor has pulled out of them this evening !
3PL a long time sponsor are leaving giving trust and confidence in the present administration has been lost.
They could be heading for division 4 again? I personally hate Wigan with an absolute vengeance as some of you appear to hate Fleetwood.
It amazes me how anyone who supports SFC could watch or support them ?
It takes all sorts mind!

Re: Wigan woes
Just getting rid of the whole town would be preferable. Other than the pub at the station and the station itself, Wigan serves no purpose
As I said, it is what it is. And what it is is a southern softie wind up merchant

Few gloating at other clubs demises in recent days…Chorley, fleetwood, now Wigan.

Not gloating i wouldn't wish them broke they have lost a major long term sponsor due to a lack of trust? Its the truth coming home with the present financial situation.Big Mac 1985 wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 12:00 am Few gloating at other clubs demises in recent days…Chorley, fleetwood, now Wigan.
The premiership is bleeding the game dry to feed itself.

Maybe their big sponsor is looking for another club?
Re: Wigan woes
Gloomy times indeed for Wigan. As well as the points deduction, their playing budget is to be reduced by two thirds next season.

Would be a Big Help if they did.

It amazes me how anyone can look at Wigan as a bitter rival and seek to gloat at whatever misfortune currently afflicts them.Gloucester man wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 11:07 pm It amazes me how anyone who supports SFC could watch or support them ?
Get a grip.
We have never, ever, played a league game against them. We have only ever played them 7 times in total and 6 of those were in county cup competitions that apparently nobody cares about.
To hold a grudge against any club because a group of people (none of whom were from that town) made a decision 45 years ago that fell in their favour rather than ours because we were so arrogant is just illogical. Like it or not, we were voted out because we didn't deserve to be there. It was 100% our own fault. We had been given warning after warning and repeatedly rode our luck. We had the fortune of being spared 10 out of the 11 times we sought re-election. Had sporting integrity been upheld and we had been relegated on merit we would have left the football league in 1935!
If you went by today's standard of the bottom two being automatically relegated then we should have lost our league status automatically in 1935, 1936, 1947, 1949, 1958, 1959 1976, 1977 and 1978. On two other occasions we also finished in the bottom four.
Conversely Wigan were denied promotion to the Football League on 34 occasions, not because of merit but because of the old pals network.
Our own club has been through enough financial problems over the years, problems that you should be more than familiar with considering how often you refer to the 1970s, that to take such pleasure at seeing other clubs go through the same is very poor taste. I wouldn't wish any fan go through some of the problems we faced, nor the problems faced by Bury, nor Fleetwood. At least in the latter case we actually had a sporting rivalry with them.

Well said, Dan. We deserved to kicked out of the football league in ‘78. I’ve nothing against Wigan whatsoever. Get over it.

Re: Wigan woes
I posted this earlier in the week which is very appropriate here.... It is from the Formby Times on 30th May 1903 just days after we, as Southport Central, were denied entry into the Football League ourselves.
https://www.southportfootballclub.co.uk ... -promises/
For anyone who can't be arsed reading it all..
Oh ..and it also backs up the research in my book that we were formed in 1888 not 1881.

This stupid, thankfully long since abandoned system, is the very same one that prevented us from gaining entry into the League before 1921, kept us in the league when we didn't deserve it on 10 out of 11 occasions, and prevented Wigan from getting into the League on 33 occasions (they got in on their 34th) when they deserved it.Councillor Trounson, Deputy Mayor of Southport, committee of Southport Central wrote: They had proved that they had merited promotion. The cups and medals were testimony to the efficiency and the standing of the Central.
MERIT BEFORE ALL
If he could have his way he would have all divisions of football so created and arranged that merit should be the absolute quality that should be recognised in preference to any other qualification. (Hear, hear). He would have them worked on the same conditions as the Premier League, that was, that the bottom clubs should be relegated to the next inferior League, and not be entitled to re-election; and the top club in the inferior League should take the place of those that were displaced. That would removed every possibility of any committee or anyone else preventing merit being recognised. That was the true spirit of sport, and he thought it was possible. So that when a team had gone through 15 years, good and bad, like Southport Central had done – and he was glad to say that they had more good than bad – and they proved their worth and respectability, and no exception could be taken to their personnel, that they should secure the honourable position to which they are entitled.
Oh ..and it also backs up the research in my book that we were formed in 1888 not 1881.

Re: Wigan woes
It was not Wigan's fault that we were voted out of the league. It was our arrogance in not doing enough to ensure that we got sufficient votes in the Old Pals Act.
Regardless, nobody who was involved in a leading capacity at either club 45 years ago is likely to have had any clout for years, the players weren't born then, even their parents would have only been children. It's ridiculous to bear a grudge against Wigan Athletic FC in 2023 for what happened in 1978.
Clearly Wigan are currently very badly run and regardless of what happened decades ago, I feel sorry for the fans.

Do you watch that lot then? If you do then i cant understand you either. I personally dont give a monkeys if you find it in bad taste its a personal opinion we are still allowed to have them just!

Becbee its a personal opinion and it was sadly Blackpools relegation and Alf Ramsey backing Wigan that did for us. Yes Gillers arrogance oh yes but i have a personal opinion it must be the Irishman in me.becbee wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 5:55 pm It was not Wigan's fault that we were voted out of the league. Re: Wigan woes
I'll tell you what's illogical - holding a grudge over something that happened on your 16th birthday in the late 1970s that was more to do with Southport's failings than with anything Wigan did. The vast majority of people who support Wigan will be too young to even remember it: do they deserve for their club to be in danger because of 1978?
I wasn't born when Southport were voted out of the Football League so obviously I don't carry the same pain. I do remember the whole thing with Fleetwood and I admit to some resentment there, though not that much. I don't really care about Wigan. I hope they survive but they're not a club we've been particularly close to in my time supporting Southport and I'm not going to hold the late '70s against them.

You're entitled to hold any personal opinion you like but you were clearly trying to provoke comment or you wouldn't have bothered posting it.Gloucester man wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 6:14 pm It seems now you cant say anything in case it upsets someone sorry thats tough. If people think your opinion is based on bollocks, don't expect it to go unchallenged.
