It was not Wigan's fault that we were voted out of the league. It was our arrogance in not doing enough to ensure that we got sufficient votes in the Old Pals Act.
Regardless, nobody who was involved in a leading capacity at either club 45 years ago is likely to have had any clout for years, the players weren't born then, even their parents would have only been children. It's ridiculous to bear a grudge against Wigan Athletic FC in 2023 for what happened in 1978.

Clearly Wigan are currently very badly run and regardless of what happened decades ago, I feel sorry for the fans.

Becbee its a personal opinion and it was sadly Blackpools relegation and Alf Ramsey backing Wigan that did for us. Yes Gillers arrogance oh yes but i have a personal opinion it must be the Irishman in me.
It seems now you cant say anything in case it upsets someone sorry thats tough. Personal opinion and if you feel the same about me and my views fine im not going to lose any sleep over a personal opinion.

Your opinion doesn't upset me at all, if you want to bear a grudge for something that happened 45 years ago then that's up to you. I'd rather move on.

I worked in Wigan and with an ex Wigan player, you`d soon change your opinion if you heard their narrow minded views.
Wigan is a Rugby League town and will never be anything else seventy five per cent of those I worked with would not be seen dead at a football match. I hated the time I worked there but had no option because my company moved us there
but I never felt welcome because and those of us from other places were always treated as outsiders. If there was a crime such as a car theft in the area it was always blamed on Scousers even when in most cases locals were prove to be the perpetrators. To be honest I don`t care to hoots about Wigan Athletic and I was around when they took our place in the league.

But whoever we support, it's not the fans fault when clubs are mis-managed but they are the ones who suffer when things go pear shaped.

Southend are another example. Something like 19 High Court Winding Up orders in 20 years due to an awful owner who just wants to make money by selling their ground.

Any club that gets stuck in a financial mire of controversy and difficulty in 2023 will generally- deserve it...including the Man City's and Everton's of this World. The Premier League and EFL have been naive,daft and stupid enough to authorise take overs of many clubs by individuals and companies without proper due diligence in so many cases (Morecambe FC could be next) so get on with the consequences when they arise as far as I'm concerned-including ALL the supporters involved.

Supporters at Bury, Wigan, Fleetwood ,Macclesfield ,Everton to name but a few who have all enjoyed "the ride" (as it's so quaintly put these days) so don't moan and whine if it goes pear shaped.

I didn't hear many Wigan supporters complaining at their latest takeover-Lisa Nandy MP for one who campaigned vigorously I seem to remember for it to go through?

Southport FC never had begging bowls out back in the league days,nor the Football League bending over backward to help in dire financial times latterly, no PFA paying players wages- unlike today?
So NO sympathy from me.

PS Regarding the County Cup games mentioned-the Northern Floodlight Cup final-2 legged at the time was quite a competetive affair I seem to remember in May 1968.I'm sure such people as Eric Redrobe thought so at the time as well...

In fairness, I don't think any Everton fans have enjoyed 'the ride' they've been on in the last 5 or so years. As I'm sure any Everton fans on here could attest, it's probably been one of the worst periods in their history and there haven't been virtually any positives since the takeover. Bury & Macc, too, have my sympathy as neither were necessarily terribly ran clubs, even when they went bust it was just one poisonous character who had been the subject of scrutiny for quite some time in both cases. I don't know enough about Wigan's situation to comment nor do I think they're comparative to us in any meaningful way and as I've said previously, I'm not keen on Fleetwood.

Yeah, you'd never have seen bad behaviour inside football grounds in the 1970s. You CERTAINLY wouldn't have seen right-wing political shenanigans like the NF recruiting outside grounds or people lobbing bananas at black people.
