Yeah, you'd never have seen bad behaviour inside football grounds in the 1970s. You CERTAINLY wouldn't have seen right-wing political shenanigans like the NF recruiting outside grounds or people lobbing bananas at black people.

The troublemakers and the banana lobbers should have been given lifetime bans then, as they should now !. (sadly) our freedom of speech laws allow fascist and other obnoxious groups to have a platform, even if the material they promote is vile....

Remember going to Springfield Park to watch Wigan play Burscough in the Lancashire Combination many years ago admit the supermarket money helped Wigan but winning the FA cup from those humble beginnings has to be admired .Fleetwood and their fans i am not so enamoured of . B ananas are part of football folk lore and hopefully stay there . looking forward to the new season and hope any new finances we may have will be put to the best use so we progress for a change.

My memory is of Wigan being in the Cheshire League, which was stronger than the Lancs Combination. Is this correct?

Just looked it up. They were latterly in the Cheshire League, but earlier were in the Lancashire Combination.

Hard to say, Wigan were in the Lancs Com for many years along with Burscough and Skem Horwich New Brighton [the first competitive game i saw] and Chorley, providing exciting hard fought well supported local derbys. Wigan Burscough and Skem were in the Chesire league at various times but i dont think this was' a promotion thing as you could win the Lancs com several times also the Chesire League but not progress higher. As far as i know the Lancs Com and the Chesire League were ended and the North West Counties was formed .When Burscough were in the Lancs Com they had a good reserve side in the Liverpool County Com which meant home games at Victoria Park every week during the season ,as is probably the same now with Skem groundsharing .Then my dad took me to Anfield in 1959 and the seed was sown ,Southport has been my go to game for many years now as well as the sixties and league cup and fa cup games Man City Sheffield Wed etc Shankly was right : SOME PEOPLE SAY FOOTBALL IS LIFE AND DEATH BUT ITS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT:

The NPL was the first league to cover all the north of England.


There were 5 teams from the Lancs Comb, 7 from the Cheshire League, 4 from the Midland League, 3 from the North Regional League and 1 from the West Midlands Regional League (is Boston really in the West Midlands?).


The top 3 teams in the first season were Macclesfield, Wigan Athletic and Morecombe.

But the discourse (indeed the thread) was about Wigan and perceptions of the Cheshire League as strong. Indicative of that strength was that those three strong clubs were in the Cheshire League when Wigan joined from the Lancashire Combination.

I wasn't arguing, just clarifying.

Ancient Mariner mentioned Marine joining the Cheshire League as it was stronger. You replied with a list of clubs, presumably as evidence of its strength. I pointed out that those clubs were no longer in the league that Marine joined.

Is it in the Warriors interest to keep Wigan FC going? Is that why he’s acquired the club?

No. If he just wanted a stadium for Warriors he could have increased the capacity of Robin Park Arena next door, which Warriors already own. That would have been cheaper than buying WAFC just to own the DW Stadium.
It's in the towns interest for both clubs to continue...and he's a Wiganer.
