50 Years ago today..21st November 1970

Post by yellowfever »

Checking the football diary-I can't believe this stat as my first experience of an FA Cup upset as a 14 year old happened so long ago-seems like yesterday....! NLP side Boston Utd turned up and deservedly beat the Port 2.0.This wasn't supposed to happen! Jim Smith later on to become Manager at Oxford, Portsmouth and QPR amongst others ran the show.Without checking up,I think Don McEvoy had just left with Arthur Peat in charge? Think injuries had hit hard too with defender Roger Aindow having to play as a make shift centre forward- which didn't help! A creditable 3803 in attendance.

...and I think it was the following week we went to Oldham and surprisingly won 4-2. The goal of the match was a volley from just outside the penalty area but I can't remember who scored it.

A traumatic afternoon, Boston murdered us, and at least half that crowd was from Lincolnshire.

Was my first 'Port game ever . Never saw us get passed the First Round as a league team with 2 further upsets along the way inflicted by non league teams Spennymoor and Runcorn which were more painfully.
